What’s On My Plate – 07/08/15

Is there anything better than homemade pancakes? Fact: I barely ever eat pancakes at a restaurant because Jon’s are my favorite.

A good ol’ fav. Scrambled eggs, avocado, chicken sausage, ketchup.

Avocado toast! With scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and yes, ketchup. Another norm around here.

It’s hard to tell but there’s greek yogurt under that pile of KIND granola.

My friend Ashley and I started off our 4th of July with brunch at Stella’s in Gulfport. This was their spanish omlet with chorizo. Not pictured: a killer spicy bacon bloody mary.

A Jon creation. Slow cooked scrambled eggs with some kind of yummy tomato creation atop toast. Side of fruit and bacon.

We had friends in town a few weeks ago for a wedding. We HAD to take them to our fav place for dim sum, Ha Long Bay.

That seem weekend we had other friends in town and we got lunch with them at Pom Pom’s, which I’ve raved about before. This was there Turkey with Ginger Cran Chutney on pumpernickel and their asian slaw on the side. Delish!

This was a salad creation by moi from leftover salmon cakes. Roasted corn, black beans, tomato, cucumbers and spinach. For the dressing I did a sriracha ranch.

Another creation using leftover salmon cakes. Brown rice, roasted corn, black beans. Topped with guacamole!

A fav salad lately…turkey, goat cheese, cucumbers, hearts of palm and artichokes with a french vinaigrette.

Another fav salad…lemon grilled chicken from Trader Joe’s, caramelized onion cheddar, hearts of palm, artichokes and sundried tomatoes with a french vinaigrette.

Roasted pork loin, mashed sweet potatoes with kale and goat cheese and roasted asparagus.

Jon cooked this delicious meal when we had friends over. Roasted pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes and ratatouille.

Needed a quick dinner one night and stopped by to get sushi at Rollboto. Love this place!

Dinner at Three Birds Tavern for a Lightning game. We hadn’t been to this place in FOREVER and decided to give it a try. I got the Shishito Pepper Burger and subbed chicken breast for the burger. It was nothing too special, but pretty good all the same. Fries were great!

Home. Made. Lasagna. Do I need to say more? I will any way…Jon made this completely from scratch…homemade pasta and all.

I made salmon cakes and we had them with leftover mashed sweet potatoes with kale and goat cheese.

Jon got fresh Grouper so he served it blackened with a baked potato and a yummy mixed vegetable creation.

Take out night! We wanted thai and discovered our fav thai place (The King and I) closed!! Apparently they sold the building (wonder what’s going in there??) So we took out from #9 Bankok down the street from them. Yellow curry with chicken and papaya salad.

Another Jon creation. I wanted to make a mexican casserole and he took it over…I don’t even remember everything that was in but it was delish!

My friend Lora and I went to happy hour at Copperfish in Tampa. I’ve been wanting to try this place for forever! They have the BEST happy hour specials…you all seriously need to check them out. Half off cocktails, wine and beer. And they have some of their house favorites at a seriously reduced rate. Pictured is their fantastic burger, grilled oysters and oaxaca shrimp.

I know this photo looks gross, but I promise it was tasty! This is one of my fav quick meals. A sweet potato covered in turkey chili and cheddar.

Homemade Grouper tacos and rice and black beans! One of the best meals in the past few months. Jon used coconut flour on the Grouper and was an excellent touch!

4th of July! Smoked bratwurst on a potato roll with potato salad and my green bean salad

Chinese Green Beans with Ground Turkey. One of the best meals I’ve made in awhile (if I do say so myself). This recipe was so easy and SO tasty. I’ll definitely be making it again!

Jon’s latest creation. Grouper with a coconut milk curry sauce complete with sweet potatoes, pineapple, mango and spinach. Served atop soba noodles. All made from stuff we had in our pantry/fridge/freezer!

This was a standard snack while we had friends in town. A cheese and meat plate that we couldn’t get enough of.

When Jon made his homemade lasagna we stopped at Mazzaro’s for supplies. We got a gelato treat as a result! This was their strawberry balsamic flavor and it was glorious!

After a shopping trip at Trader Joe’s I just had to dig in to my finds. Their caramelized cheddar is seriously my fav cheese in the whole wide world.

Foodie Finds

It’s no secret that I’m a self proclaimed foodie. And as I scour the aisles at my local grocery store or favorite market I am always coming across new-to-me products. Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite foodie finds with you!

First up is the all mighty Pro Bar. Introduced to me by Lora Hogan, she gave me this bar to try a few weeks back. I had it one day after a morning workout and holy wow…delish! Highly highly recommend these for a post workout snack. Lora also loves their energy chews!

I found this Clever Foodies Scramble in the egg section of my local Publix. I love eggs for breakfast and would love to add more veggies in them, but alas I tend to be lazy and just usually top them with salsa. This Scramble takes all the work out for you…just add a few tablespoons to your eggs and cook! Very very tasty. They have a greens version that I’m looking to try out next.

This is my new favorite sauce. I want to have it on everything. I found this at a local European market and decided to try it on chicken. I just baked chicken breasts topped with this Ajvar sauce and served with rice and green beans. So simple and SO yum! This would also be great on a meaty fish. I also want to try it with zucchini noodles.

Another foodie gift from Lora! She gave me one of these Naked smoothies to try since I’m a smoothie fanatic. I LOVE them. I’ve been having them post workout. Great balance of almond milk and berries.

Picked up this white wine at Total Wine and it’s my new fav. Light and crisp with a lot of flavor. Good luck on pronouncing it.

*Foodie tip: Whenever I like a wine I always make sure to snap a pic. Then I save it to a wine photo album on my phone. That way the next time I go to the store I can remember which ones I like!

This Big Spoon Chai Spice peanut butter was one of my finds when Locale in St. Pete first opened. So many amazing flavors playing wonderfully together here. If you love chai flavor you need to hunt this down.

What are some of your recent foodie finds?

Sandwiches and Sushi

New restaurants are popping up in St. Pete faster than you can say “Where should we go to eat?” From Italian to Sushi to New American, as a foodie I am thrilled to have so many awesome options for my tastebuds.

Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria

One new place that I’ve been to twice now is Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria. Originally started in Orlando, a long time fan decided he wanted to bring Pom Pom’s concept to St. Pete. Pom Pom’s serves a variety of teas, as well as inventive sandwich creations. It’s become one of my new favorite lunch spots. It’s also located high up on Central Ave, which is nice and close to where we live in south St. Pete.

The first time I stopped by I was surprised when I walked in. The inside does not quite match the outside. Inside there’s funky art and eclectic furnishings. To the left you’ll see numerous cubbies filled with bags of bread you can take home. At the counter there’s numerous delectable desserts.

Their menu is vast and some combinations may have you scratch your head, but ask the staff and they’ll assure you that it will all make sense once you take a bite.

On my first visit I got the Fu Man Chu (Asian Pulled Pork, Watercress, Goat Cheese, Ginger Cranberry Chutney and Red Onion) and the Smoked Salmon BWT (Smoked Salmon, Bacon, Tomato, Watercress, Cheddar Cheese, Cream Cheese and Lemon Caper Aioli). I also got a side of the potato salad and cole slaw.

They were both excellent. The bread is fresh and has the perfect consistency and let’s what’s in between the slices do the talking. The chutney and the goat cheese were a surprising pairing with the asian pulled pork…smokey yet sweet with the right amount of tang. The Smoked Salmon BWT tasted like a more awesome version of my favorite breakfast, bagel and lox. The potato salad and cole slaw were both good, but nothing too exciting.

On a more recent visit I got The Cobb (Turkey, Tomato, Melted Bleu Cheese, Watercress, Red Onions, Bacon and Avocado) and their House Salad (Mixed Greens with Apples, Goat Cheese, Almonds and Red Onion). The Cobb was perfection…tasted just like it’s namesake salad in between bread. The salad was also very good except that the lettuce needed to be chopped up more.

There are a lot of sushi places in the Tampa Bay area, but there are few “go to” sushi places. The right sushi place needs a nice atmosphere, friendly service, fresh fresh fresh fish and inventive rolls. Hook’s fits the bill.

I haven’t been to Hook’s original location on MLK for years, but was glad to see they were opening a second location on 4th St. One night after seeing Pitch Perfect 2 (so good) with my friend Ashley, we decided to give it a try.

The inside is much smaller than I thought it would be, but the space is bright and intimate and tastefully decorated. Our server was great and when asked which rolls were his favorite he rallied off about 10 of them, haha.

They have amazing sounding appetizers like sushi nachos, steamed buns and rocket fritters. But I just wanted #allthesushi that night. So I ended up with two rolls…First Love and the Mexican. They were both oh so fresh and oh so tasty.
